What is Youthline

Topics in this section:

Youthline is a collection of organisations that work together to make sure young people are able to get the best support, when they need it. We work with young people, their familes and those supporting young people. Our organisations are made up of volunteer and paid staff members - and we have centres based across the country.

Youthline was proudly established in 1970 by a group of people who realised that there were not a lot of options for young people needing to access help and development services. Youthline Palmerston North has existed for over thirty years in the Manawatu. There are currently over 35 volunteers working for Youthline alongside five paid staff members.

Youthline is a non-for-profit, non-denominational, community-based organisation dedicated to helping young people achieve their potential. Youthline Palmerston North is committed to the following vision for young people in our community:

  • A sense of contributing value
  • A feeling of community connection
  • Knowledge and support about the choices available for the future
  • An understanding of the potential and value of youth in the community

In addition to the core phone help line service, Youthline Palmerston North also offers a range of local services for youth, their friends and whanau:

  • Events for youth in the community
  • After school programme in Kelvin Grove
  • Seminars in schools/organisations
  • Mentoring
  • School and community presentations

While Youthline Palmerston North is best known for the youth helpline, the organisation is also greatly involved in the development of the community. We get behind young people, their friends and whanau and try our best to reach out by providing other services such as: seminars at schools, presentations, after-school and holiday programmes, face-to-face mentoring and support programs.

Networks

We understand that sometimes it can be difficult asking for support. It can also be difficult working out who to contact for what. To make sure it's as easy as possible to use our services, and other services who work with young people, we make sure that we have good relationships across the country with other providers so that we can point you in the direction of local services.Youthline works to form and strengthen links with families, local community, schools and other social services.

We link with the following:

  • Kelvin Grove Alternative Education
  • Youth One Stop Shop
  • YMCA
  • Highbury Whanau Centre
  • Cool Kids & Families
  • Roslyn School
  • Milson School
  • Freyberg High School
  • Kelvin Grove Neighbourhood Watch
  • Te Wananga O Aotearoa
  • Te Manawa Science Centre

We would like to thank Palmerston North City Council and WINZ for funding the Kelvin Grove youth worker and the programmes that are run from the hall. We would like to acknowledge the volunteers that kindly give their time to these projects as it is greatly appreciated.
